John Boyega To Star In Pacific Rim Sequel

John Boyega, burst on to the scene as First Order Stormtrooper defector Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Now it seems, Boyega will be piloting a Jaeger here on Earth, in the war between mankind and big ass sea lizards called Kaiju, in Pacific Rim 2.

Said director Guillermo Del Toro: “I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.” via DeadlineFinal_Four_Jaegers

The first installment, Pacific Rim released in 2013 and directed by Guillermo Del Toro was a big screen, CGI filled,  popcorn extravaganza that received positive reviews from movie goers and mixed reviews from critics, grossing over $411 million worldwide over it’s theatrical run. With numbers like that it’s easy to see Warner Bros. would be game for a sequel and hopefully John Boyega’s new found stardom will add to the appeal.

Pacific Rim did have several noticeable flaws but that is to be expected from time to time when starting a new franchise, especially one that is such a gamble. It’s not hard to imagine a film like Pacific Rim to going the way of John Carter and being a huge box office bust. Now that the franchise has proven interest and bankability, Warner Bros. will be able to bring better writers, actors an creators into the fold, hopefully making Pacific Rim 2 critically and commercially more successful as it’s predecessor.pacific-rim-2

No news yet on the specifics of Boyega’s role in the film and it will be very interesting to see if he can differentiate himself from his role in the galaxy far far away. Star Wars actors such as Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher had a difficult time in other roles after their success in Star Wars and hopefully Boyega won’t fall into the same trap. One thing is for sure about Boyega though, as is evidenced in the Force Awakens, his chemistry with the other actors combined with his on screen charisma is sure to make him “Drift-Compatible” with anybody in Pacific Rim 2.
